My Year In A Nutshell

At the beginning of 2013 I remember feeling distinctly underwhelmed about my life. I seemed to have lost my previously care free nature and replaced it with constant worries and feelings of great responsibility about life in general and I often wondered where on Earth all the fun had gone. So on the first of January I set myself a new year’s resolution – to find myself. My aim was to reconnect with the old me, the one who seemed to breeze through life without a care in the world, the happy me. Well now we are nearing the end of a year which I can safely say was one of the most challenging but also one of the best years of my life so far. Like everybody else I’ve had my ups and downs, however I’ve learned so much from my experiences and in turn I’ve achieved my goal of finding happy Kate.
There was one person in particular that helped me find my happiness again and that was my best friend who is also called Kate. We’ve been inseparable since we met at the age of three at nursery school, however about a year and a half previously we had a bit of a falling out and hadn’t spoken at all since, needless to say I missed her terribly. Then one morning in mid January to my utter surprise I came downstairs to a hand posted letter with my name on it, I opened it in curiosity as I couldn’t think who it could have been from, I’ll give you three guesses (although I severely doubt you’ll need them). I had a tear in my eye as I read what Kate had written about how it was silly that we hadn’t spoken in so long, reminding me of our pact that we made at the age of seventeen about how we would still be out partying together when we are old ladies. I immediately got in touch and what followed was a series of the best nights out of my life (which were so good largely due to the hilarity that she and I found in busting the craziest dance moves we could think of, hair whipping and high kicks spring to mind – although I wouldn’t recommend the hair whipping, we found that it can quite possibly cause the quite aptly named ailment of whiplash, no I’m not joking!) As best friends do we laughed until our insides hurt, often on one of our late night car journeys to nowhere (nowhere was quite often KFC or to the end of my road where we would just sit and chat about everything and anything). She had helped me let my hair down and it was exactly what the doctor ordered, I was no longer missing my right hand woman and I was much happier in myself.
(Kate and I having the obligatory posing sesh while getting ready for one of our crazy nights out!)

In July this year I had quite a bit of time on my hands, I had finished the arduous task of writing my dissertation and was at a loss for ways to fill my new found spare time. This is when I decided to start writing my blog and created a youtube channel, both of which I have come to love so much, I’ve read beauty blogs and watched videos on youtube for years and so I thought ‘hey, why not give it a try?!’ and that’s when ‘Kate’s Beauty Station’ was born. I love sharing my views regarding the contents of my beauty stash and I’ve enjoyed writing my ‘Feel Good Friday’ feature tremendously as I find it to be really therapeutic, I just hope you enjoy reading my ramblings! At times work has meant that I’ve had to slacken off on the blogging and so my posts haven’t been as regular as I’d like them to be, however in 2014 I’m going to get a diary and organise my time so that I can keep on top of blogging, as like I said, I do so love it. As far as my youtube channel is concerned, I plan to make better quality videos in 2014 and more of them, I have my new camera now and I’m exited to put it to good use. The main reason for my lack of uploads in the past few months is down to the fact that I dislike the quality of my previous videos, but with that problem fixed I have no excuse not to film lots of new content for my channel. I’ll be sure to keep you informed as to when I do!

A milestone month for me was August, this was the month that I received my dissertation result. I was so nervous to find out my score as I had poured my heart and soul into this piece of work, however I knew that whatever the mark was that I achieved it was the best I could have done and so I braced myself and hoped for the best. To my absolute astonishment I received 85%, I was beside myself with excitement and sheer amazement as I hadn’t even thought that I was capable of achieving that kind of grade for such a large piece of work. It meant a lot to me especially since when I was younger I hated every day of school and had never even thought of going to university until I was 20, that’s when I decided to go back to college and undertake an access to higher education course. It was a very happy moment for me to receive my grade and it proved to me that it really is possible to achieve whatever you want if you really put your mind to it, no matter what it may be.
The day after I received my result for my dissertation I went on holiday to Ireland for a week and  a half with Gavin, we visited County Kerry which is a place that we hold close to our hearts, we visited there during the beginning of our relationship and so to go back was lovely, it’s such a beautifully scenic place. You can read about our time in Kerry here.

(Gavin and I on holiday)

Gavin had been working in Dubai for the past year and in October I made a bold move and followed him over. It was scary to move away from my family for the first time, however I’m settling in to my new life well and enjoying lots of fun new adventures, although I do sometimes miss the comforts of home. I even miss the Winter cold (would you ever have thought it?!) I now split my time between Dubai and the UK. I’d miss my family, friends and of course my cats far too much otherwise!

These moments and a lot of others have shaped a year that has taught me just to relax a bit more about life, to appreciate the good times with my loved ones no matter what else is going on around me, to have more fun and to trust that I am going to be just fine. I have become the happy old care free ‘me’ that I used to be and I’m more content than ever. Looking forward to 2014 I plan to carry on this trend, to lead a life that I am truly happy living, to make more memories that I will cherish for years to come with the people that I love, to take advantage of the opportunities that come my way and have fun in the process and not to worry about the small stuff, as in the end it really doesn’t matter.
So there you have it, my year in a nutshell. This will be my last blog post of 2013 as Gavin and I are off to Sri Lanka in three days time for our Christmas holidays, I’m so exited! So my lovelies, I shall bid you farewell until January when I’ll be back with lots of holiday snaps to share with you, new videos and most probably reviews of beauty products that I will have undoubtedly picked up in duty free (you just have to, don’t you?!)
(Raising a glass J )

Hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Review: Lush Trichomania Solid Shampoo

I’ve wanted to try one of the Lush solid shampoo bars for a while now, however I was always slightly skeptical about the amount of lather they would produce (I like lots of bubbles). Last week I decided to bite the bullet and give one a try and I’m happy to say that I was not disappointed, there were bubbles galore, amazing! I chose Trichomania as it contains creamed coconut which is supposed to be extremely moisturising, my hair is naturally curly and can get quite frizzy and dry if left to its own devices so I was happy to find that this product really made my hair feel soft and appear shiny. The fact that it obviously smells like coconut (my favourite scent ever) is just an added bonus.

To use a solid shampoo all you need to do is run the bar under warm water and lather it up using your hands, alternatively you could try rubbing it straight onto your head. I didn’t try this method, however Gav (who was intrigued by the concept of a shampoo in solid form) did and claimed that it worked just fine. Whatever floats your boat as they say!

My Week In Pictures #1

Today marks the beginning of a new weekly feature which I’m sure you’ll be familiar with if you’re a regular visitor to the blogosphere. In a nutshell, I’m going to share with you my life each week in the form of pictures that I’ve taken on my instagram. This week has been a fairly chilled one with meals and coffees out with my boyfriend Gavin and the usual day to day stuff such as work, yawn.
Costa gingerbread cream latte. Cutee!  //  Relaxy day with Gav  //  Happy that Dubai won the 2020 expo as it means free baskin robbins for all :)
Cheesecake factory for dinner //  Bored in work with Gav //  My boy brought me home rock (no I’m not being rude)

I hope you enjoy this new feature, do let me know your thoughts.

Feel Good Friday #10

                                                                                     tumblr.com
Okay this isn’t a rant, but I shall paint you a little picture (bare with me, you will see my point I promise). This week I worked at a PR event for the launch of Louis Vuitton’s 2014 Cruise Collection and I must say the experience taught me one thing which is this - working within the fashion industry is something I can safely say I would never wish to do. Not because I don’t appreciate clothes because god only knows I do - but simply because a large number of the high end fashion boffs who attended the event were so unbelievably rude. You know the film ‘The Devil Wears Prada?’ – well that’s exactly what it was like. At one point a woman asked me in an agitated tone how she could get to the VIP lounge, I politely replied “it’s up the elevator on the third floor madam” at which point she gave me a look as if to say ‘are you stupid?!’ and barked “NO! It’s FULL! HOW do I get up?!” To which I simply replied “you wait for it to come back down…” She stared at me in genuine shock before threatening to report me for being rude – well at this point I was fighting back laughter with all my might. I managed to hold it together though, phew!
So here’s my point, what if I happened to be having a particularly bad day or week? What if I was a person that takes rudeness to heart? It takes no effort at all to be kind, you never know what type of day somebody may be having or what their circumstances are so I always try to be as nice as I can, I even smile at random people and I find that in turn it makes me happy. As cheesetastic as it sounds happiness is infectious so spread it, you never know – you might just brighten up somebody’s day!

Winter Nails

As I’m a total fiend for nail polishes (I have enough that I could wear a different colour every week of the year and still not have worn them all - eek), today I thought I’d share with you some of my favourite shades that I like to wear during the colder months.

L-R

American Apparel. Port – A beautiful dark red with brown undertones, very glam.

American Apparel. Bronze Dash – Metallic bronze with tiny silver glitter pieces that create an extremely shimmery look on the nails. How very festive!
American Apparel. Violet Panache – Vibrant metallic blue purple, again with tiny glitter pieces - this time they’re violet. I love this nail colour for christmas parties.
Barry M. Racing Green – A gorgeous deep metallic green.
China Glaze. Cleopatra – Gold glitter with the odd green and purple fleck, opaque in one coat. My absolute favourite, it doesn’t get much better than this!
Topshop Nails. Pillar Box – The name says it all, a bright post box red.
Ciate. Sand Dune – A lovely metallic gold.
Who noticed the running theme? It would appear that I quite like my metallics at this time of year wouldn’t it! As I do so love adding to my nail polish collection please leave me some suggestions in the form of your favourite winter shades.

Feel Good Friday #9

(I reblogged this picture a little while ago on Tumblr, the perfect example of lovely festive knitwear)

This week the sun has decided to hide behind the clouds here in Dubai and between you and me, I’ve kind of loved it a little bit! I'm usually a total sun worshiper, however yesterday morning I woke up to the sound of rain and strangely enough, I was filled with excitement. It made me realise that no matter what kind of weather you're used to, you can always find ways to enjoy it.
Now I love this time of year at home, Christmas is just around the corner, that festive feeling is starting to creep in, however I’m like a lot of people in the sense that the weather really affects my mood and when I get cold I get grumpy. So for anybody who happens to be getting a little tired of the dreary weather, here are some of my favourite things to do at this time of year.

Wrap up warm in my favourite winter clothes while doing activities that induce some festive spirit – I love wearing lots of knitted jumpers in Autumn and Winter, last year I was on the hunt for the perfect woollen Christmas jumper which I never found. This year I’m away for the whole of November and December and before I left the UK I noticed that the shops are full of them – typical. If I was at home right now I’d be taking full advantage of the lovely knitwear while going for long chilly walks, doing some early Christmas shopping and drinking lovely hot Seasonal drinks. Last year’s favourite was Starbucks’ toffee nut latte – mmm!
Stocking up on bath bombs and melts and having lots of pamper evenings – because what better way to spend a winter night when it's cold outside and you don’t feel like going anywhere than to jump in a hot bubbly bath and chill out! I like to use a deep cleansing  face mask while I’m in the bath, then after I get out I’ll use a lovely rich body butter, get in my cosy winter pj’s and do my nails.
Carrying on the cosy theme, snug nights infront of the TV – Such a simple thing and yet there is nothing I love more than to curl up on the sofa on a night time in my onesie with my cats, festive scented candles lit, watching my favourite programmes or movies and eating my favourite treats (milky buttons and double decker bars) – ahh bliss!

Wearing darker shades of lipstick and nail polish – I don’t know about you guys but I really love taking advantage of the fact that you can get away with wearing heavier makeup during the day at this time of year. I love wearing deep berry shades on my lips and nails while I tend to go for gold and smoky colours on my eyes.

I miss doing these things so much now that I’m away from home. What are your favourite ways of making the most of the colder weather? I love being nosy!

Feel Good Friday #8

Recently my blog has lacked a bit of Feel Good Friday in its life and I’ll be honest with you, it has simply been down to a lack of inspiration on my part. I could have carried on the feature and found topics to write about, but I didn’t want to do that. I want to write about things that inspire me, otherwise what’s the point right?!
This week Gavin sent me a link to this video called 'The Pale Blue Dot' by Carl Sagan and told me to check it out, after watching it my first thought was ‘wow, I need to share this’. It’s amazing how caught up we can get in our own lives, so much so that we often forget the bigger picture. We forget that the human race is causing such harm to our planet as well as to each other and to the animal kingdom. This video is a humbling insight into the reality of life on this small yet beautiful planet that we call home and our responsibility towards preserving it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Review: La Roche-Posay Anthelios AC SPF 30 Matte Extreme Fluid

Like many people, my skin is prone to blemishes and for that reason I like to use an SPF that’s specifically formulated for use on the face. I’ve tried a few that are good but I absolutely adore the Anthelios AC Matte Extreme Fluid by La Roche-Posay, it tops any other that I’ve tried by a country mile. Now, I am aware that winter is setting in back home in the UK but as you may have read I’m currently in Dubai for a while and so this little gem has come in very handy.
The SPF has a light milky consistency and is specifically formulated for oily to acne prone skin. It has a ‘dry touch’ finish and absorbs into the face instantly leaving absolutely no residue, meaning it doesn’t clog my pores - perfect! It also contains perlite which is supposed to absorb excess oil and zinc gluconate which regulates sebum. For those of you with sensitive skin or if you simply like to avoid artificial preservatives, the fluid is paraben free, fragrance free, non-comodogenic and to top it all off it’s also water resistant. What more could you ask for eh?! I bought this from Boots and at £15.50 it is slightly pricey but in my eyes any product that protects my skin from the sun’s harmful rays while not irritating my skin is well worth it! I shall definitely be repurchasing this baby.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture 1 - The Perfect Red Lip

The perfect red lipstick, that ever sought after little gem that every makeup enthusiast needs in their makeup bag? Well I’ve finally found it. With a lovely creamy texture and a high gloss finish that stays on for hours and doesn’t smudge, YSL’s Rouge Pur Couture 1 (Le Rouge) has truly captured my heart.
The lipstick has a yellow undertone meaning it will suit both light and dark skin tones, if you’ve ever seen an Emirates air hostess and wondered what they are wearing on their lips – this is the one. The Rouge Pur Couture range is apparently Victoria Beckham’s favourite collection of lipsticks and I can see why, this has to be the most luxurious product I have ever used on my lips, it’s so moisturising and the packaging is beautiful, definitely one that I enjoy pulling out of my handbag for top ups after a meal – don’t pretend you don’t love a bit of pretty packaging too!
All in all Rouge Pur Couture 1 is my definition of the perfect classy red lipstick.
What’s your perfect red lip?

Halloween Makeup By MAC

Recently I was lucky enough to be part of a training day for MAC makeup artists to practice their theatre makeup. Basically me and a bunch of other girls were chosen to be their models for the day while they turned us into crazy characters, my character was an evil clown – which worried me slightly as I’m beyond terrified of clowns. However it turned out amazingly well and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. I must say, my makeup artist for the day was extremely talented – jel. I wish I could do makeup like this.

It took three hours to make me look this evil!

The inspiration for the look

The pamper chair, I was so exited when I saw this!

Halfway through having my makeup done, they used tissue paper to create the scary smile.

Apologies for the small pictures, blogger won’t allow me to make them bigger for some reason. Damn you technology! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this post. How are you wearing your makeup this Halloween?

Guess Who's Back!

Hi Everybody!
So you may or may not have noticed my absence from the world of blogging recently. It’s been a little over a month since my last post and I must say I have missed my little space on the internet. The reason I’ve not had a lot of time to share my thoughts lately is because I’ve made an exiting trip to a different country – the U.A.E to be exact. I’m currently in Dubai working for a little while and I’ve been a busy bee since arriving three weeks ago. My time here so far has consisted mainly of settling in and going to work, with a few nice meals and days out thrown in there for good measure!
A spot of breakfast at the Madinat Jumeirah with a lovely view of the Burj Al Arab

So now I’m all unpacked and settled in I have more time to dedicate to my beloved blog, which I’m very happy about as I have lots to share with you - new products that I’ve been loving, days out and another exiting project that I have in the pipeline which I can’t wait to tell you all about so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that one! My lovely boyfriend also got me the best present ever in the form of a DSLR camera, what do you think of my snaps? Im so exited to use it for my blog and youtube videos, makeup tutorials here I come!
Hope you enjoyed this brief update, as you can tell there is a lot more to look forward to on my beauty station before the year is out, watch this space...

Feel Good Friday #7

                                                    Pinterest.com

This week I watched a documentary on Channel 4 called Fabulous Fashionistas which I found so inspirational. If you didn’t see it, in a nutshell the programme was about six women with an average age of 80 who refused to let age define them, they had their own unique sense of style, did what they wanted and didn’t conform to the preconceived ideas that society has about what an older person should be like. What’s more, they were all absolutely amazing people!
This got me thinking about the topic of age. Why should age define a person?! When I’m an old lady I want to be like them, to have my own unique sense of style, to still do the things I want to do. Anybody who knows me knows that I’m not one to always conform to society's ideas of what you should and shouldn’t do. Why? Well because I’m an individual, just like everybody else in the world and I don’t see why anybody should make up rules on how anybody else should live their life. I’m aware this might make me sound as if I live some sort of crazy life, I really don’t – I just make my own rules instead of following other peoples.
So there you have it, my inspiration for the week. I just hope that when I’m older I still live life the way I do now. I hope that I’m even braver than I am now and do more things, I want to be an old lady who has brightly coloured hair and wears purple lipstick - that’s my little pact that I’ve made with myself. Did anybody else see the documentary and if so what were your thoughts?

The Beauty Blogger Tag!

Yesterday beauty4free2u tagged me to do the Beauty Blogger Tag, so here it is! She has a fab blog where you can find information on free beauty samples as well as reviews and beauty tips.
Rules for the Beauty Blogger Tag:
·         State that this tag was created by The Beau Bow
·         Tag some more beauty bloggers
·         Title this as I’ve done to show what the tag is about

1.      Name a beauty routine you rarely do.
Hmm, I’m fairly meticulous about my beauty routine so I don’t really know, I can sometimes be lazy and not use a face mask every week but I do try to most of the time.
2.      Is washing your makeup brushes something you do regularly?
Yes, my skin can be quite sensitive and I’m a total hygiene freak. I use Johnsons baby shampoo to clean them.
3.      How long will you last with chipped nail varnish?
As soon as it starts to chip I take it off, otherwise I’ll just pick at the bits that are chipped and leave flakes of nail varnish everywhere, nice!
4.      How long do you put off buying/replacing a beauty or nail polish product even if you need it (i.e. top coat, foundation, etc)?
I tend to replace the product before it has run out to save the stress. Plus I like nice new things.
5.      What is your worst beauty habit?
Not leaving my spots alone.
6.      Name something none beauty related that you put off all the time?

Tidying. I’m a clean freak but I’m the messiest person alive.

7.      When going out somewhere do you leave getting ready to the last minute or not?
Nope, I know even if I give myself enough time I’ll be late so I try to give myself plenty of time to get ready.
8.      Can you commit to spending bans?
Hmm, yes if I needed to but I do like to shop I can’t lie. I’m good at budgeting though.
9.      How organised are your makeup and nail polish collections?

They’re organised in the sense that I know where everything is, to anyone else it would look messy. An organised mess if you will.

10.  What is the longest time you have gone without writing a blog post?
A couple of weeks last month when I was away on holiday!

The beauty bloggers that I am tagging are:
@rosedust21
@1988kateann1988
@closbeautyspot
@ilestbecca
@albmakeup

My skin saviour!

A couple of weeks ago my skin broke out worse than it has since I was a teenager. I’ve always suffered from the odd blemish but this was bad, so bad that I decided to ditch the makeup for a little bit (which I never do) and get myself to the chemist to see if they had anything that could sort my poor face out!
So the lady behind the counter suggested a cream called Quinoderm 10 for the treatment of acne and all I will say is - if you suffer from breakouts you need to try this! Within a few days my spots had completely cleared up and the best part is this little tube of amazingness (not a word but so what – it should be) is only £2.49!
The only downside to this product is that it makes the dye come out of fabrics so be sure to wash your hands after using it and use an old pillow case for bed. It can also be quite drying so I’d only recommend it for topical use on the places it’s needed, I got a little carried away and smothered it all over my face and ended up with dry patches – not sexy. However I will definitely be repurchasing this cream in future when my skin decides to turn on me, I’ve never known anything to work quite like it.
